Leila came to Kazakhstan to work. That’s all she tells her family back across the border. It’s an easy story that many women communicate to those back home; the shame resulting from honesty would be too much.
For many years, Leila had a job outside the prostitution industry. She was a cook, and a good one at that. She’d been personally employed by a family back in her hometown, but she knew she had to leave when the family had refused to give her any salary for two months straight. She couldn’t make ends meet. She grew desperate, and so set off for Kazakhstan.
Now, she just longs to get back to her country and spend time with her grandchildren. They’re growing up without her near, while she’s growing weary working here in the shadows in Kazakhstan.
We are a group of volunteers committed to exposing modern day slavery here in Kazakhstan and providing assistance and alternatives to those trapped in it.
