Aidana stood slightly apart from the other ladies on the corner. Her eyes flicked from the road to her phone and she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear nervously. She knew judging between themselves didn’t help but she also knew from the surprised looks from those who passed by that she was different from the other girls. She was the only one still sober, the only one monitoring her language to sound polite and pleasant and, as far as she knew, the only one with a university education. As recently as a year ago the idea of working in the sex industry would have been ridiculous to her.

That was before her husband’s sudden death. She had funeral expenses, accommodation costs and most importantly a pre-teen to care for. With her husband gone there was no time to search for the perfect job, much less wallow in grief. She had the responsibility to find alternative income as soon as she could. So she came to the corner famous for sex services and she stood – the whole day each day, just to make ends meet, without any energy remaining to imagine a way out.
