Rayana

Rayana sat in her usual spot, outside the dilapidated store waiting for clients. The woman with the small son walked in a wide curve to avoid getting too close to her. Two friends passing her next murmured to each other. She couldn’t make out much, but she heard “lazy” and “greedy” so it couldn’t have been good. She didn’t need to hear what they were saying about her though. She knew more than they did, and knew that she was much worse than they could realise.

Only
Rayana and God knew how bad she was in her soul. And God had acted. That’s why he’d put her in this trade – as punishment for her bad character. But even now He wouldn’t leave her be, He was testing her, seeing if she would continue to stay and work her body to provide for her four small children. It was the only means she had to do it, and she wouldn’t fail, she wouldn’t give up on them.

So let the people talk. They couldn’t say anything she didn’t already know.
